Juan Dolio – More than a beach town

Juan Dolio

More than a beach town

JUAN DOLIO

Guayacanes and Juan Dolio are beach towns that mainly cater to residents driving in from Santo Domingo on the weekends for the beach, attracted by the very good restaurants and good golf. Two large residential communities, Metro and Guavaberry, plus a handful of recently constructed apartments, and its hotels keep the community alive during weekdays.

Juan Dolio is also an option for visitors wanting to make side trips to see Santo Domingo and La Romana attractions, both around an hour west or east. Las Americas International (SDQ) is the recommended port of entry for those headed to Juan Dolio hotels.

BEACHES

PLAYA JUAN DOLIO

This beach has both waves and calmer areas. Juan Dolio has two roads – Calle Principal and the Boulevard, around which most of the residences and restaurants are located. In recent years, high-rise beachfront apartments have gone up that cater to affluent city dwellers who drive in on weekends, attracted by the many good restaurants. Go for the sunset, and stay for dinner.

PLAYA GUAYACANES

A yet to be developed beach town. Its golden sand beachfront is walkable and fronts beach homes. Good beach shoes are recommended because there are some rocks on the way. It is a lovely stroll to do early in the morning with the rising sun or late in the afternoon to see the sunset.

JUAN DOLIO NIGHTLIFE

Eating at the many good restaurants in Guayacanes at Calle Central and Juan Dolio at the Boulevard or Calle Principal, with or without a view, brings thousands of city residents to this beach area, especially on weekends. Many of the restaurants double as bars and lounges. Try your luck gambling at Dream Casino at the Coral Costa Caribe resort in Juan Dolio.

CUEVA DE LAS MARAVILLAS

The Cave of the Wonders is located west of La Romana on the San Pedro de Macorís-La Romana highway, near the Soco River and Playa Nueva Romana. It has some of the best and most numerous examples of indigenous Taino rock art (dating back 500 to 800 years) found in the eastern part of the island. Around 500 paintings and engravings on rock have been counted and many can be seen on the 787-foot (240-meter) trail inside the cave. The cave art shows human figures, iguanas, snakes, owls and bats. Visitors will go down 82 feet (25 meters) to the cool inner chambers of the earth. The path can be covered in around an hour and is recommended on days of intense heat or rain.

GOLF

LOS MARLINS GOLF COURSE

Los Marlins is part of the Metro Country Club residential complex in San Pedro de Macorís, half way between Santo Domingo and La Romana. It’s a fairly short course, just 6,410 yards from its blue tees. However, players who know it well warn that it should not be taken lightly. That’s because some of the fairways are extremely narrow and others are protected by sand traps and water. Its signature hole is the 4th hole, a 193-yard par 3 from the white tees. It’s a totally straight hole with out of bounds on both sides. Because its very small green is surrounded by traps, this hole is difficult even for the most professional of golfers.

Location: Metro Country Club, Boulevard de Juan Dolio

GUAVABERRY GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB

Located 30 minutes east of the Santo Domingo airport and close to the Juan Dolio tourist area, the course borders a tropical forest and nature reserve. The 13th hole is its signature hole, a par 3 with a crystal-clear waterfall that can distract even the most expert golfers. The 16th hole, for example, blends right into a natural tropical forest. The final hole then provides a different challenge, asking you to play against strong crosswinds that come from 200,000 year old coral rock formations. The course is located at the center of the Guavaberry residential development.

Location: Autovía del Este Km. 55, Juan Dolio

Some of the most beautiful places in the Dominican Republic

Back in 2008, the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism glossed the DR as the country “that has it all.”

The country is still sticking with that slogan and it’s easy to see why:

  • Year-round tropical climate.
  • Lush coastline with 250 miles of beaches.
  • Historic cities and culture.
  • Mountains.
  • Waterfalls.
  • Golf courses.
  • We could go on.

PLAYA MORON

Is one of the gorgeous Samana Peninsula´s smaller beaches. Visitors have a good chance to spotting a humpback whale during the January-March mating season.

EL SALTO DEL LIMON WATERFALL, SAMANÁ

It´s a mile-and-a-half trek through the jungle to get to the top of the cascades. The reward is the 130-feet-high El Salto del Limon, which flows into a natural pool that´s great for swimming.

CATHEDRAL OF SANTA MARIA LA MENOR

Dating to 1512, the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor in Santo Domingo is widely considered the oldest cathedral in the Americas. Gothic architecture, 500-year-old mahogany doors and the former site of Christopher Columbus´ tomb all wow visitors.

PUERTO PLATA ``TELEFERICO``

A popular excursion in Puerto Plata is the ``teleferico`` tour. Panoramic views of the city and ocean can be seen from the cable cars. A massive statue of Jesus Christ stands at the top of Mount Isabel de Torres.

LOS HAITISES

The protected forest of Los Haitises has limited road access. It´s become a popular eco-tourism destination, with most visitors arriving by boat. A variety of geographical landscapes are found in the region.

ALTOS DE CHAVON, LA ROMANA

Altos de Chavon is a massive replica 16th-century Mediterranean village. It´s home to a cultural center, an archeological museum and an amphitheater, but just walking around is impressive.

BAYAHIBE BEACH

Bayahibe Beach has a bar and a lighthouse and not much else, but it´s known as one of the nicest places in the country to watch a sunset.

JUANILLO BEACH, CAP CANA

Juanilo Beach is a calm, secluded public beach on the country's East Coast.

HEROES DE LA RESTAURACION MONUMENT, SANTIAGO

The Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration of the Republic is an eight-story structure dedicated to Dominican soldiers who fought the final War of Independence against Spain.

MULTIGENERATIONAL TRAVELERS FIND THEIR BLISS IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Dominican Republic

The best destination for all

Dominican Republic

Wide variety of unique attractions for guests of all ages make the Caribbean country the perfect family getaway

Known for its wide variety of accommodations and attractions, Dominican Republic remains one of the most popular Caribbean destinations for families, offering something for groups with any interests or budget size.

The country is continuing to grow in popularity as an option for multigenerational travelers, thanks in part to the increasing number of direct flights from many major U.S. cities, making it a convenient travel destination. Along Dominican Republic’s nearly 1,000 miles (approximately 1,575 kilometers) of coastline, families are sure to find accommodations and activities perfectly suited to their needs. The country offers a wide array of hotels and resorts that cater specifically to families. Many of them are all-inclusive, making it an ideal spot for those who want all meals, drinks and entertainment to be rolled into one affordable price.

Dominican Republic hotels and tour operators have perfected multigenerational travel offerings, anticipating the needs of family travel groups and catering to them,” said Magaly Toribio, Marketing Advisor for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. “No matter the age of visitors to our country, all guests are sure to find something perfectly suited to their interests, activity levels and budgets.”

EASYGOING ALL-INCLUSIVES

For groups looking for an all-inclusive experience, the country offers award-winning resorts throughout the country – La Romana, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, Samana and others offer all-inclusives inspired by the unique flavor of each region. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic’s most well known destination, offers multigenerational groups something everyone can agree on: picture-perfect beaches. The east coast’s languid azure waters lap at the area’s pristine white sands, dotted with an array of family-oriented hotels and resorts offering a playground for guests of all ages. Many of the accommodations here have high-quality onsite kids clubs and excursions catering to children as well as spas, designer golf courses, nightlife opportunities and more for adults, making it one of the best destinations in the Caribbean for family vacations. Punta Cana’s off-resort excursion offerings range from cenote swimming, dolphin encounters, parasailing and moonlight ziplines to educational day trips to historic Santo Domingo, tours into Punta Cana’s countryside, snorkeling at La Romana’s offshore islands and more.

ADRENALINE-PUMPING ADVENTURES

With nine distinct ecological zones, Dominican Republic offers a wide variety of terrain for many types of adventure activities, with the northern coast and northeastern Samaná Peninsula historically the most popular. The north coast’s Puerto Plata is an active destination especially well suited for families and multigenerational groups with a love of sports and adventure. The choppy Atlantic waves along the shore make Puerto Plata’s beaches hotspots for water sport enthusiasts of all ages, with the province’s town of Cabarete known as the Kiteboarding Capital of the World. Those looking for a unique day trip in Puerto Plata can visit parks offering everything from ziplines to interactions with small native monkeys, or take teens and tweens on a canyoning, rappelling or ATV tour in Puerto Plata’s geographically-diverse natural playground. Other popular adventure destinations include mountainous Jarabacoa, offering access to the highest peak in the Caribbean and some of the Caribbean’s best white-water rafting.

EXCITING ECO-TRAVEL

The country’s robust ecological diversity makes it a haven for multigenerational groups looking to reconnect with nature and marvel at Caribbean flora and fauna – areas like Jarabacoa, Constanza, Bayahibe and Samana each offer a distinctive picture of the island’s natural beauty. The Samaná Peninsula in the country’s northeastern corner is a widely untouched area of Dominican Republic, ideal for eco-travel, providing opportunities for families to have a quiet Caribbean escape. The area is sprinkled with some of the best resorts and seafood restaurants on the island, tucked between private coves and bays, and specializes in nature activities. Families will find plenty to explore here, such as visiting the 618 square miles of caves, mangroves and islets in the famous Los Haitises National Park viewing the thousands of humpback whales wintering in the Samaná Bay, and enjoying a refreshing post-hike dip in the pool of the peninsula’s breathtaking Salto el Limón waterfall. In the opposite corner of the island, the southwestern province of Barahona offers a more arid climate – families looking to observe nature can find everything from American crocodiles to endemic birds in this region.

URBAN EXPLORERS

For groups preferring the familiar comfort of bustling cities, city centers such as downtown Santiago, Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo offer numerous options for culture and entertainment. As the most cosmopolitan city in Dominican Republic, and also the oldest city of the New World, Santo Domingo offers both modern amenities as well as a rich background. Founded in the late 1400s, Santo Domingo is a city of firsts – multigenerational groups can explore winding cobblestone streets and charming ruins together in the city’s Colonial City, enjoying a variety of high-end cuisines and convenient day-trips to other areas of the country, with numerous plazas, museums, live music, parks and much more just steps from one another in the capital city. Accommodations in the area range from affordable boutique hotels to international hotel chains, with private homes or villas available for rent to families preferring to have their own space to call a home-away-from-home.

Santo Domingo – NIGHTLIFE

SANTO DOMINGO

the perfect place for an alfresco meal surrounded by hundreds of years of history.

Santo Domingo | has it all

Santo Domingo is the largest, most animated, cosmopolitan and people-friendly city in the Caribbean and Central America. Avoid peak hour traffic, and you are in a metropolis that has it allThe Colonial City in Santo Domingo‬ is the perfect place for an alfresco meal surrounded by hundreds of years of history.

SANTO DOMINGO NIGHTLIFE

Some of its architecture can be stunning. The city lit up at night is gorgeous in both historic and modern areas. The lighting of the Colonial City takes you back to the 16th century, but in the city centerit is 21st century all the way.

Most nightspots are located in on Winston Churchill, Gustavo Mejía Ricart, Abraham Lincoln, Roberto Pastoriza, Sarasota or Rómulo Betancourt, Venezuela, on the Malecón, and the many streets of the Colonial City. Many are open-air terraces and bars for people watching and easy socializing. Big hotels have their music spots, such as L’Azotea at the Dominican Fiesta, Las Palmas at the Hotel Santo Domingo or Merengue Bar at the Jaragua.

For Latin music dancing, Lucia 203 and Onno’s are popular in the Colonial City. Serious dancers are drawn to the Avenida Venezuela. In the city, upscale discos boast that they play the same music that is being heard at the top nightspots abroad.

Acclaimed performers are booked all year for the Teatro Nacional or Bellas Artes halls. However, more casual theaters are located in the Colonial City such as Hard Rock Café facing Columbus Park and Casa de Teatro, the off-Broadway hang out in Santo Domingo, where the next Juan Luis Guerra will perform first. The small Guloya and Las Máscaras theaters stage comedy, drama and other plays all year long at their Colonial City address.

Dating back to the 16th century, the Ruinas de San Francisco, the first monastery in the Americas, is today famous for the live Bonyé musical entertainment that attracts hundreds of people at sunset on Sundays. Hostos St. between Emiliano Tejera & Restauración streets.

Plaza de España is the magical large plaza fronting the Alcazar de Colón. Restaurants and bars line the top of the steps overlooking the Alcazar. On Fridays and Saturdays watch folklore shows sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism.

Compared to US and European cinemas, movie theaters are a bargain in Santo Domingo. Those located at the new malls feature the latest technology.
